BNP is secreted by cardiomyocytes and can inhibit the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts, playing an important role in vascular remodeling and blood pressure regulation. In case of hypervolemia or other conditions causing ventricular stretch, the body synthesizes BNP and secretes it into the blood to control the balance of body fluid and electrolyte through interaction with renin angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS). In cardiovascular diseases such as congestive heart failure, hypertension, acute myocardial infarction, myocardial hypertrophy and cardiomyopathy, B-type brain natriuretic peptide gene expression, synthesis and secretion are significantly increased. Therefore, brain natriuretic peptide can be used in the auxiliary diagnosis of heart failure.
